? Outdoor Learning in Primary 6 & 7 – Poetry and Den Building at Glassdrummond Woods

17th Apr 2026

Primary 6 and Primary 7 pupils recently took their learning outdoors for a wonderful lesson in Glassdrummond Woods, where creativity and nature came together in learning experience.

The focus of the session was descriptive writing and poetry inspired by the woodland environment. Surrounded by the sights, sounds, and textures of the forest, the children carefully observed their surroundings before using powerful vocabulary to write their own poems about the woods. They worked hard to include vivid descriptive language to capture the atmosphere of Glassdrummond Woods.

The pupils gathered together to read out their poems aloud. It was a brilliant opportunity for them to share their creativity and listen to how others had interpreted the same environment in different and imaginative ways.

To finish the session, the children took part in an exciting den building competition. Working in teams, they used natural materials and problem-solving skills to construct shelters in the woods. The activity encouraged collaboration, communication, and creativity, and there was plenty of enthusiasm and friendly competition throughout.
