The Big Bridge
On Wednesday, our pupils enjoyed a fantastic educational trip centred around the exciting development of the new “Big Bridge” linking County Down and County Louth.
The day began with a fascinating historical workshop led by Bill Reilly, who helped the children explore the local history of the area and the importance of the crossing point at Narrow Water over time. The pupils were fully engaged as they learned how the landscape and waterways have shaped life, travel, and trade in the region for generations.
Following this, the children attended an informative presentation and information session delivered by Padraig McBride. This session gave valuable insight into the purpose and vision behind the new bridge project, as well as how it will benefit communities on both sides of the border in the future. The children had the opportunity to ask thoughtful questions and deepen their understanding of the project.
The learning continued as pupils explored the historical background of bridges in the area, building on what they had already discovered earlier in the day. They then focused on the engineering behind modern bridge construction, learning how designers and engineers plan, calculate, and build structures that must be both strong and safe while also working with natural forces such as water, wind, and tides.
A real highlight of the day was when the children got the opportunity to design and build their own bridges. Working together in teams, they used a range of materials and problem-solving skills to create structures strong enough to support weight. The excitement grew as the pupils were able to test and even walk across their own bridges, bringing the learning to life in a memorable and hands-on way.
Overall, it was a highly enjoyable and enriching experience that brought together history, geography, science, and engineering in a real-world context. The pupils returned to school inspired and full of enthusiasm after a memorable day of learning.
A sincere thank you to everyone involved in making the trip such a success.
